Happy Pilot and co-pilot piloting aeroplane from airplane cockpit

Our Mission

P2W’s mission is to help pilots and aviation students navigate the regulated system of aviation in order to keep them flying healthy.

We are a group of experienced professional pilots with over 100 year of total industry experience, providing programs that contribute to the physical and mental wellbeing of each pilot we serve.

These programs have been developed based on Captain Reyné O’Shaughnessy’s  35 years as a commercial pilot, as well as long established industry protocols. With our guidance, pilots and aviation students can finally find the industry specific assistance they need.

What this really means is that we provide the missing piece of support for the pilots’ physical and mental health, allowing them to sustain a holistic life personally and professionally.

Competency and Crew Resource Management (CRM) training for pilots has been wided adopted by our industry. There are 8 core competencies of aviation, and based on the CRM definition P2W believes in using all resources – we view the 9th core competency as the wellbeing of the pilot.

Our P2W programs focus on helping pilots and aviation students develop, implant and sustain non-technical skills (NTS) through mentoring and signposting using relevant resources.

P2W’s focus is to keep pilots flying by educating and mentoring wellbeing. We believe that only 50% of training for a pilot happens in the simulator, the other 50% – the non technical skills (NTS) – is just as important in the development of the whole aviator.

In line with FAA directives, we have the capability to advise and provide ongoing support for pilots’ mental health and psychological wellbeing. We understand the challenge this poses to both pilots and AMEs and are well placed to provide creditable support and solution in meeting these directives.

P2W’s capabilities include:

    • Support AMEs doing recurring medical evaluations through advice, assessment tools and protocols and referral routes for further assessment
    • Provide proactive, computer-based education (can be part of recurrent training or stand-alone) to destigmatize mental health. These modules enable pilots to self assess, compare results to their peer group and, depending on results, and if need be discuss them with their AME, accredited psychologist.

Experienced pilots as well as aviation students are more than welcome to check out our resources. There is something for everyone.

CAPTAIN

REYNE O’SHAUGHNESSY

Captain Reyné O’Shaughnessy has been a commercial airline pilot for over 34 years for a Fortune 50 company. She currently captains B767 aircrafts and has logged over 10,000 hours of total heavy jet flight time. Her aircraft experience includes B727 and A300/310, and, notably, thirty four years ago was one of the first women B747 qualified.

Her interest in mental health and performance began while engaged as a volunteer in professional pilot union-sponsored programs (Critical Incident Response Program (CIRP), Pilot Assistance Hotline Team Hotline (PATH), and Professional Standards (ProStans)). This experience gave her insight to how physical and mental health, and performance are closely tied. As a result Reyné created the first ever health and wellness website designed specifically for airline pilots for her airline. Building on the desire to better her coworkers’ and her own health, Reyné holds a certification from Brown University in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) an institution known for academic rigor in public health. She holds a BS in Leadership, an Executive Certificate in Business from UC Berkeley, and is actively pursuing a medical health coaching accreditation.

Reyne O’ has over a decade of experience as a health and wellness strategist. She continues to be an aviation safety advocate centering on well-being (human factors) which impacts all aspects of safety based. She is a visionary leader who brings a clear idea of how the future of mental health and performance in aviation should look.

Two of Captain Duarte Lopes’ life goals are to keep a curious mind, and to make connections that might seem improbable. He likes to ask “Why not?”, and finds that, from the perspective of the beginner, the world is filled with endless possibilities

During his career as an airline pilot, Captain Duarte has experienced high stress / high demand situations over short and long periods of time. He’s seen firsthand the impact this has had on himself, as well as on other aviator’s professional and personal lives and mental and physical health. As a result, he feels compelled to find solutions for these problems. As he looked into other high stress/ high demand professions, such as first responders, medical staff, ambulance drivers, security forces, ATC controllers, and even stock market brokers/dealers, he noticed some similar patterns connected with the impact of these professions.

After starting a Peer Support Group based on Critical Incident Stress Management, it became clear to Captain Duarte that prevention and awareness is paramount for individuals and organizations; he also found that honest and frank discussion are key. We must be willing to have the difficult conversations and become proactive instead of reactive.

As the science began to grow, Captain Duarte became interested in mindfulness-based approaches to wellbeing. He found that Mindful Awareness Practices (MAP’s) offer effective support in life-coaching, CRM, mentoring, and training within the aviation sector. MAP’s support our ability to explore different perspectives and build bridges. Their benefits and techniques have also proven useful in a wider scope as part of his Peer Support System.

Now, he believes there really are endless possibilities to improve the quality of life for fellow aviators.
